End-Grain Mosaic Board

This board is built from end-grain blocks, set by hand so the growth rings form a mosaic across the surface. Each block shows its own pattern of rings, and because no two blocks are alike, no two boards are either. Small variations in tone and grain are part of the piece, the natural character of wood that has been worked by hand rather than by machine.

End grain is kind to your knives. Instead of cutting across the fibres, the blade slips between them. They part under the edge and close again after it, so your knives stay sharper for longer and the surface wears gracefully over years of use. It is a traditional technique that takes patience to get right, with every block cut, fitted and finished by hand in our workshop in Sóller, where the rhythm of the valley sets the pace of the work.

Looking after it is simple. Hand wash it, dry it standing on an edge, and give it a little oil now and then to keep it nourished. With that small amount of care, this is a board made to last, one that gathers marks and memories of meals shared at your table, and makes a meaningful gift for anyone who loves to cook.
